There is love in the air this January in Wales, St Dwynwen is the Welsh Patron Saint of Lovers, St Dwynwen’s Day is celebrated on the 25th January.
In the 5th Century Dwynwen was a princess who fell in love with Maelon. However her father arranged for her to marry someone else so she fled to the woods, grief stricken she begged God that she would forget Maelon. An angel visited her and brought her a potion which erased all memory of Maelon and turned him into a block of ice.
She was then granted 3 wishes by God, her first – Maelon was thawed, the second wish was god would help all true lovers and her third was that she should never marry. In gratitude she became a nun. St Dwynwen is also the patron saint of sick animals.
St Dwynwen’s Day is now celebrated in many parts of Wales with greeting cards, romantic meals and gifts such as Welsh lovespoons.
And of course not forgetting a few weeks later is St Valentines day so even more love and romance in the air!
